The Age of Wonders scenario editor is a powerful tool used to create the scenarios and maps in AoW. It will be included with the full game so users can create their own scenarios and campaigns.

The editor allows the user to edit existing scenarios, create maps from the ground up, place armies, set goals and winning conditions for each scenario made, and modify many other parameters. Maps can be one of four sizes: 48x48, 64x64, 96x96, and 128x128 hexes, with up to two subterranean levels. Scenarios can be made for single-player-only or multiplayer games, which can be played by any combination of human and computer AI players.

Editing the maps is easy and is all done in a familiar and easy to use windows interface. Each level on a map consists of two layers: the base terrain type and an overlay level. The latter consists of decorative foliage or actual movement-affecting terrain, such as mountains, forests, roads, and even special locations. The editor also has the ability to convert landscapes from one type to another—painting over grasslands with the snow-tile brush will instantly convert your grassy landscape into a snowy one! All object properties (such as cities, stacks of units, etc.) can be edited easily by a double-click or a right-click menu.

These options open the door to an amazing level of variety and detail far beyond what many other editors allow. Scenario files are relatively small (less than 100kb) and can easily be posted or traded online! To top it all off, hero and item editors are also part of the AoW scenario editor!
