Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic offers an exciting world filled with new landscapes and structures to explore. Landscapes reach a new level of detail, containing new trees, shrubs and mountains. Some structures let you instantly recruit wild creatures, grim mercenaries or noble heroes. Other locations have specific uses, like the new Anti-Magic Zone which provides islands of protection within hostile magical domains. Some places are more sinister, such as the dark Dungeons you can explore to rescue prisoners willing to join you. But these new sites appear trivial compared to the emergence of the mysterious Shadow World.
Throughout the lands, gates have appeared to an alternate plane of existence. Many blame the Wizards' wars for causing a cosmic rift which has linked the Blessed Continent to this cursed world. Dark Shapes have started appearing through the lands, raiding remote villages. The bravest adventures have attempted to enter the shadow world, but only a handful have returned. They describe a world twisted by magic, with little attention paid to the normal laws of nature. Time appears to flow differently and light bends and turns in impossible ways.
